Wednesday, October 31, 2018, / Wigwam Red course.

Wigwam Heritage Red Course to some of us, the Heritage Course is a traditional layout lined with pine and eucalyptus trees. The course’s closing stretch of holes (15, 16, 17 and 18) just may be the toughest final four holes in the Phoenix area. The 15th hole is a 414-yard par-4 that requires a well-placed tee shot to bring birdie or par into play. The 454-yard, par-4 16th features a dogleg left and an approach shot to an elevated, well-protected green with water right and back. The 17th hole is a lengthy par-3 measuring a solid 250 yards from the tips. And finally, the 591-yard 18th hole is a monster par-5 with a dogleg left off the tee. Three well-played shots are required for a chance at birdie or par on the closing hole.

Wigwam Red course Scores

There he was Alan Arndt wins it at 70 net. Richard Brooks is back in town and took 2nd place like he never left with a 72 net. He beat out Phil Weidemann who also had 72 net but lost out to Richard on a scorecard playoff. Phil gets 3rd place and Eugene Disque scored the Atta Boy with a 73 net. Nice scores and beautiful weather today.

Golf Humor

A golfer was having a terrible round – 20-over par for the front nine with scores of balls lost in water or rough. When his caddie then coughed as he steadied himself over a 12-inch putt on the 10th, he lost it.

“You’ve got to be the worst caddie in the world!” he yelled.

“I doubt it,” replied the caddie, dead-pan. “That would be too much of a coincidence.”

Saturday, October 27, 2018, / San Marcos

The San Marcos Golf Course boasts a recent multi-million dollar renovation and now includes a brand new state-of-the-art irrigation system that produces year-round premium playing condition, expanded lakes, new tee boxes, reconstructed bunkers with new sand, and green enlargements on a handful of holes. The result is a strategically-diverse and visually stunning layout that makes for an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all playing abilities.

My favorite VGA golfer won today. Me of course, Harley Ewing won it with a 67 net score after taking a 10 on # 18. Some days it just works you know? Larry Burton was second one stroke of the pace at 68 net. Neal Fisel was third at 69 net with Tom Hebert and Dan Campos sharing the Atta Boy at 70 net. Cart path only and tall grass made the course a lot tougher than normal. Recent reseeding.

Next up for VGA, Wed, October 31, 2018 Wigwam-Red 90 degree rule 7:30 AM $ 45.00

This Arizona treasure was established in the 1920’s, a time when golf courses did not get built through dense housing developments, and certainly not with tight, target fairways. At the Wigwam, the golf courses have remained at the top of the list. This jewel of the desert is among the Southwest’s last remaining golf resorts built for a pure golf experience. Canals, streams and lakes cascade through the journey. The shadows cast on greens and bunkers are from majestic parkland trees, not multi-story resort buildings. The Wigwam’s three 18-hole championship golf courses offer a diversity that cannot be matched by any other Arizona resort. Here, the golf enthusiast has their pick of not just one or two courses, but three 18-hole courses – 54 holes of championship golf including two courses designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, Sr. And, in true Wigwam style, each course – The Gold, Blue, and Red offers a unique challenge that adds spice and variety to one’s stay at this timeless and relaxing retreat. For guests that truly love the game of golf, The Wigwam features a variety of golf packages to entice every traveler, from family getaways to golf-intensive buddy trips for 5 or more. We are proud to announce the addition of the Warren Schutte Player’s Academy. Warren was the first Hall of Fame Golfer at UNLV. And though he has maintained pro status for the last 14 years, his focus has now shifted to helping others excel at golf.

Wednesday, October 24, 2018, / Stonecreek

Etched into the desert on pristine terrain in the heart of Phoenix, Stonecreek Golf Club’s magnificent par-71, 6,871-yard championship course was originally designed by Gary Grandstaff and Roy Dye, brother of the iconic Pete Dye and part of the Dye Designs dynasty. The course was subsequently re-designed by noted golf course architect Arthur Hills & Associates to modernize course infrastructure and bring it up to today’s standards while incorporating numerous environmentally-friendly maintenance and agronomy practices. The result is an adventurous, breathtaking links-style layout that has been rated four stars by Golf Digest. Mature trees frame emerald green Bermuda fairways and hilly, elevated greens, with creek beds meandering throughout the course and coming into play on five holes – adding to the course’s beauty as well as its strategic diversity. While challenging for scratch golfers, five sets of tees on each hole enable golfers of all ages and abilities to enjoy this picturesque desert golf gem, which features panoramic vistas of the Squaw Peak Mountains from every hole.

Al Dan blasted the field by 7 strokes today to win the Stonecreek event. Nice job Al, well done. Tom Giljum, Phil Weidemann, and George Kowalchik finish tied at 73 net. Tom got 2nd, Phil got third and George gets the Atta Boy, all on the Scorecard playoff. I have no idea what the playing condition out there, but pretty high scores for most of the field suggest tough at the very least.

Rained out at Legacy! Typhoon Conditions.

The Legacy Golf Club, rich in heritage and history, is an 18-hole par 71 championship golf course designed by renowned golf course architect Gary Panks. Located on what was once Dwight B. Heard’s 7,500-acre ranch, the golf club is rich in Arizona heritage and history. Taking great pride in preserving and integrating many of the historical structures and monuments, our 18-hole championship golf course offers a unique look and an added opportunity to experience some Arizona history and of the Heard legacy, from which the golf club takes its name. The original two-grain silos, built in 1902, still remain along the 18th fairway and were once the tallest structures in Maricopa County. The Sierra Vista House, which marks the 1st tee, was visited on occasion in the early 1900’s by Theodore Roosevelt and Pancho Villa. Come to make your own history at the Legacy Golf Club!
