Slightly cool this morning but Tom No Shoes Hecocks warmed up fast and scored a 66 net to tie for 1st place with the Golden Lad Rusty Silverman. Tom retained his prize with a scorecard playoff win. Rusty got 2nd place. Neal Fisel scored well and took the 3rd place prize. A three way tie for the Atta-a-Boy at 68 net, Ron Gunderson, Doug Patterson, and Rocc Wilson. Atta-a-boy guys. A rumor on the course, was that Dan Christiansen was twice struck by a venomous  snake. Don’t know how that rumor started. Next up Kokopelli a difficult little East Valley treasure. See you all there and rest of the scores below.

Next up for VGA, Wednesday, March 1, 2017 Kokopelli 8:15 $45.00.

Wednesday, February 22, 2017 Palmbrook

Originally opening in 1972, Palmbrook Country Club offers the most FUN Golf Country Club experience in Sun City, Arizona. The 6,500 yard Jeff Hardin designed golf course offers an exceptional park style tree lined golf course with newly updated bunkers and course amenities. The brook meandering through the back nine enhances the beauty of the course while putting a premium on well hit tee shots.

Nice day, easy course to play, who could ask for anything more? Certainly not Tom Giljum, he took 1st place money with a nice 64 net. Tied at 67 nets were the next three players, John Adair, Steve Richter and Neal Fisel. John got 2nd place, Steve got 3rd, and Neal must clean another spot on his home mantle for his latest Atta-a-Boy. Playing the wrong tees again is always a favorite move I have made famous on the VGA trail. Did it again today. What you get when you play combo tees. Hate it. Not quite as bad as injuring yourself striking a tree root on a shot. It’s the sudden stop you know. Careful out there guys. See you at Western Skies Saturday. Everybody else below.

Golf Humor

Saturday, February 18, 2017 / Union Hills

In the Phoenix area, discover one of the northwest valley’s hidden treasures… Less than five minutes from the 101 Freeway and Union Hills Drive lies one of the valley’s best kept secrets… Union Hills Golf & Country Club. A semi-private club with all the amenities you would expect A Championship Greg Nash designed 18-hole golf course; first class practice facilities, A clubhouse featuring Large Dining Room, The Del Grill and Cocktail Lounge.

From the course POTVGA comments: It rained for the first six holes steady not hard but steady for about 20 minutes. After an hours worth of rain it poured down and after that it stopped so we had fairly decent conditions to play in from then on. The Greens were in good shape and the course was in good condition. Dan Christiansen seemed to have no difficulty. He touched the field for a 5 stroke victory over the closest competitors at 64 net. Great perseverance Dan and well done. Tied at 69 net were “The Golden Boy” Rusty Silverman and Tommy “No Shoes” Hecocks although I suspect he wore his shoes today. Rusty bested Tom on the scorecard playoff and took second place. Tom took third place with no Atta-A-Boy today. Well done guys you have our admiration to play in that weather and do well too. Field scores below:

Wednesday, February 15, 2017 Bear Creek

Fun, Affordable Golf for Players of All Ages and Abilities! Bear Creek Golf Complex is a 36 hole “inland links” golf facility, consisting of 2 courses: An 18 hole championship length course, and an 18 hole executive length course. Bear Creek also has a full Practice & Learning Center, staffed by PGA Professionals who are available for both individual and group lessons. Both golf courses and the practice area were created by the Nicklaus Design Group & Architect Bill O’Leary, opening for play in January 2000.

Perhaps Bear Creek was in as good of condition as we have ever played it. Greens were decent and held up well if you struck them correctly and the fairways had grass in most of the right spots. More than that there was no more beautiful weather than we had early with the wind getting to be a small problem later in the day. Rich Golz came in with a rejuvenated knee and a and  a consistent shot that carried him to the win with a 64 net. Great job and hope you win many more. Thanks for the drinks too from our table. Second place went to Richard Brooks at 66 net.  A very capable player as of late. Two were tied at 68 net coming in, fortunately for me I had the better back nine and won 3rd place on the scorecard playoff. Unfortunately for John Euler he captured the Atta-a-Boy again. Personal notes, Doug Rankin’s family is suffering today with the passing of his Father in law. Our condolences go to the family and friends. Steve Richter is back competing again. Cart partner today was in his words the former Legend, Danny Clark who struggled today but managed to encourage me on. Thanks Dan. Next event up is Union Hills, great little track and hope to see all of you there. Rest of the field’s scores are below.

Saturday, February 11, 2017 / Apache Creek GC

Apache Creek opened on November 23, 1994. In this short time, it has become quite popular with golfer Valley-wide. Apache Creek is a turf-style desert course with transitional areas framing the fairways, making accurate tee shots an absolute must if you want to see negative numbers on your scorecard. The small-to-medium sized greens can be a bit feisty. However, with a little skill, you’ll capture a few birdies, and with Apache Creek’s great rates, they won’t cost you an arm and a leg in the process!

What a beautiful day it must have been at Apache Creek, temps in the low 70s and a slight breeze blowing. Beneath the shadows of the Mighty Superstition Mountains where his massive Villa is under renovations, Grady McEachern came up with a very decent round, especially for a guy playing with virtually one shoulder functioning.  He captured 1st place with a 63 net score, by two strokes over two players tied at 65 net. Dare I say, “You are Da Man Grady”. Unfortunately he was not in the player’s pot, so he settled for the glory. Dan Clark at 65 net assumed his legendary role once more by winning 1st place money. Tom Hecocks also had 65 net but lost to Dan on a scorecard playoff for 2nd place money. Neal Fisel at 66 net got the 3rd place money and an Atta-a-Boy in the Big Dog points. Dan Christiansen also tied with Neal at 66 net took an Atta-a-Boy in everything, I guess you could say. Bear Creek Wednesday let’s get out and play some golf. Rest of the fields scores below.

Some words from our PotVGA Tony Dalton: I have to say the course was in excellent condition. This is the first time I have played it and I asked the rest of the guys who played it before and they all said this is the best they’ve ever seen it. The greens were very smooth, semi fast and the Fairways all had grass on them. If Grady had put a few more dollars and he could’ve won all the cheese today, as it is he got first place Dog points with a great score of 63 net.

Next VGA event is, Wednesday, February 15, 2017 Bear Creek – shotgun 8:15 $54.00.

Wednesday, February 8, 2017 Coldwater

Located in the West Valley of Phoenix, AZ, Coldwater Golf Club offers a championship golf experience combined with service levels and course conditions that surpass the expectations of golfers visiting the facility.  The Forrest Richardson designed course features spectacular elevated tees, deep swales, and cascading fairways that create rolling terrain and dramatic, undulating golf holes that break the mold of most West Valley Phoenix golf courses. Each hole at Coldwater golf club offers it’s own character, beauty, and challanges that together create a golf experience that will challenge players of all skill levels and inspire golfers to play the course again and again.

Scott Sheetz wins at Coldwater today with a 64 net score. Dave Dean comes in second with a 65 net and two players tied at 66 net for third place. Jim Bays captured the money on the scorecard playoff and the lucky Atta-a-Boy goes to John Adair. You are next to win John. See you all at Apache Creek Saturday. Rest of the field scores below.

Saturday, February 4, 2017 Aguila

The Aquila Golf Course facility offers two golf courses; one is a Championship length course while the other is a par-3, nine-hole course. The championship course provides an excellent game of golf for an affordable price. There are scenic views of mountains and downtown Phoenix as well as a challenging layout featuring several water hazards and bunkers. Although the terrain is rather hilly, it is still relatively walkable. The course has an excellent range of holes that each have a unique character, the par 5’s are especially notable. Native grasses and wildflowers are also present on Aquila’s Championship course, further adding to its natural beauty.

After playing better and capturing an Atta-a-Boy last Wednesday at Club West, I put it all together, avoiding the usual blow out holes, and keeping it on the course for my best net ever 62 and a first place finish at Aguila. Aguila is definitely my new favorite course. Playing in my group too was Doug Patterson who took second place with another great score from him at 64 net. Great job D2. Coy Miller got third place with a 67 net. There was a tie for the Atta-a-Boy with Danny Campos and Neal Fisel scoring 68 nets. They didn’t ask for a scorecard playoff I guess. Rest of the field’s scores below. See you at Coldwater Wednesday. One note to share, my cart partner today Gordon Lukert, got a birdie pitch from probably 40 yards on hole #9. As everyone knows Gordon being the conservative type was not in the birdie pool. He seemed happy though.

Wednesday, February 1, 2017 Club West

Tee it up at Club West Golf Club! Boasting a stunning 18-hole Brian Whitcomb/Ken Kavanaugh design that serves up 4 sets of tees ranging from 4,985 yards to as much as 7,142 yards from the back tees. The course’s elevation and beauty distinguishes itself from other Phoenix, golf courses. Elevation changes that are nowhere more evident than at Club West’s signature par three: the downhill “double green” 17th hole that is highlighted by dramatic views and a tee to green elevation change of over 100 feet. Club West also features a complete practice range, well appointed golf shop and full-service Agave Bistro that highlights spectacular views from the elegant dining room and patio. The 120-seat dining room also is one of the area’s popular banquet venue and is ideal for wedding receptions, special celebrations and corporate events.

Greg Bertram came in with a nice 65 net to take the Club West event today. Tied at 66 nets were Tim Haight and Richard Brooks. Tim got 2nd on the scorecard playoff and Richard got 3rd. Great work and well done out there. There are several ways I could have been someone today. In fact if I had just double bogeyed #16 instead of scoring a 10, I would have won. The Atta-a-Boy is mine however and based on a lot of bad play from me in the past, I am happy to own the coveted prize.  Perhaps Aguila will work for me Saturday. See you all there. Rest of the field’s scores below.
