Hot, I’m sure it was. Tony Rodriquez lowered the temp to 67 net and took 1st place in today’s event. Bill Myers captured 2nd place at 69 net and two tied at 71 net for third place. Steve Richter won out on a scorecard playoff to get the third place money. Dave Dean accepted the Atta-Boy and someone was heard to say good effort too. Next up, Saturday July 2 2016 Grayhawk 7:30:00 AM $50.00. Beautiful course, you don’t want to miss this one.
Thomas Hebert played a steady round and won at Southern Dunes with a 67 net today. Nice win Tom. Al Dan took 2nd place with a fine 69 net. Way to go Al. Tied at 70 net were Len Waller and Danny Clark. Len got 3rd on the scorecard playoff and Danny puts another Atta-Boy on the mantle at home. The course was very playable and as usual tough to handle today even if you play your best. The heat and flies came out to make it somewhat less than perfect. All and all it was fun to play it again. I would also say the grill makes on of the best tenderloin BBQ sandwiches I every tasted. Really good. Next up, Wednesday June 29 2016 GC of Estrella (Ranch) 7:27 AM $ 33.00. Another fine Troon Course, see you all there.
Tony Dalton scores a net 68 and took first place in today’s event. Tied at 68 net were John Pierce and John Euler. In a tale of “Two Johns”, John Pierce got second on the scorecard playoff and John Euler gets third place. Hot hot hot, waiting for mid October? Next up for VGA, Saturday June 25 2016 Southern Dunes 7:30 AM $ 38.00 and they don’t call it Dunes for nothing. If you like a challenging and cerebral course try this one out. Troon course so you know the playing conditions should be great.
Tony Dalton 2016 Champion of Champions winner, and President’s Cup winner too.
Champion of Champions playoff between Tony Dalton for Wednesdays and Ken Baca for Saturdays played out last Saturday. Winner was Tony Dalton by 5 strokes 70 net to 75 net. Well done Tony and great job by Ken just to get there.
The President’s Cup tournament, (Wednesday, April 13, 2016 and Saturday, April 16, 2016.) is open to all active members of the VGA. Since the VGA plays every Wednesday and every Saturday, the members can enter the tournament to play on Wednesdays, or Saturdays, or both. Participants must be willing and available to play on consecutive weeks until final winners are determined or they are eliminated from competition by losing their match. On the first day of the tournament, participants are paired by blind draw and each pair competes in a net hole by hole match until a winner is determined. On consecutive Page 1 Valley Golfers Association Tournaments Wednesdays and Saturdays, the previous week’s winners compete in pairs until one Wednesday pair and one Saturday pair remains. The winner of the final Wednesday pair then competes with the winner of the final Saturday pair for overall tournament first and second place. The losers of those matches must schedule a separate match to determine a winner for overall tournament third place. All matches are played under net hole by hole match play rules. The entry fee for competition is $10.00 paid by each participant to the tournament coordinator prior to the first match. No additional fees are required for subsequent matches. Each winner of each match throughout the tournament immediately receives $10.00 for the win. For the overall tournament, The VGA treasury pays $100.00 to the first place winner, $60.00 to the second place winner, and $40.00 to the third place winner. The treasury money is awarded at the annual awards dinner if the tournament winners are then known. If not, the awards are made upon completion of the tournament.
2016 President’s Cup Results
Tony Dalton is the finalist for Saturday’s competition and John Pierce “Mr Cheese if you please” is Wednesday’s finalist. These two will finish off by playing each other again in match play to capture the President’s cup. Neal Fisel who was beaten by Tony last Saturday will get 3rd place. Having observed Tony and John play last Wednesday for the Wednesday crown, it would be worthwhile to be a fly on the golf cart. Let the match begin soon and may the better player win. And they did finally get it done. Earth and Fire came together and no quarter was given. Tony Dalton prevailed 5-4 and sent John Pierce home from Dove Valley defeated in match play but not in life. Like I said wish I could have been there. Tony nice job man you are taking home all the gold.
Tommy (No Shoes) Hecocks does it even better this time. Just off his hole in one exploits at Karsten, he wins at Longbow with a coveted under 60 score of 59 net. Now that’s something Tom, well done indeed. Shooting a 65 net which would probably win 99% of the time, Doug Rankin captured 2nd place. Nice shooting Doug. We had two players tied at 67 for third place, Jeff Currie and Bill Heller one of my playing partners for the day. Jeff got 3rd on the scorecard playoff and Bill had to settle for the Atta-Boy. All the same, Bill nice work. The weather held up long enough for most of the players to get in without heatstroke. Thanks to the early start time. All in all not bad. Next up for VGA, Wednesday June 22 2016 Rancho Manana GC at 7:33 AM for $ 38.00. Rancho Manana Golf Club, located in the heart of the Sonoran Desert in historic Cave Creek, Arizona, features a Scottsdale area par 70, championship course with dramatic elevation changes and unspoiled desert terrain. Their stunning, high desert course invites you to match your skills against nature while enjoying the unparalleled and unforgettable surrounding desert. It’s where Mother Nature plays!
Look out VGA players, Neal Fisel is on a roll. His 67 net took 1st place at Verrado Golf Course today. Great job Neal Fisel. Three more players came in tied at net 70. Tony Dalton got 2nd place on the scorecard playoff, Ron Gunderson got 3rd and John Euler, well there was no room for John and he was awarded the Atta-Boy. Sorry John you must have quite a collection of them eh? Next up for VGA, Saturday June 18 2016 at Longbow (+) 7:04 AM for just $30.00. Great course especially for this price. Starts early to beat the heat so sign up now. Got some great pictures from Ron Amstutz vacationing in Bulgaria. Looks like he’s working on his golf game there. Check them out on this site on the media page. Was a great day for golf today weather wise and I’m sure the golf course was great too. See Ya at Longbow.

Wow if you missed this one you missed some fun. There was Neal Fisel acting like a cowboy at his first rodeo riding the hills of Karsten in perfect form. Smokin the field for 1st place and a great 63 net score. Good one Neal. Then there was Tim Haight coming in at 66 net, three strokes off Neal’s pace and claiming 2nd place, you got a groove going my man. Tied at 67 nets was my golf partner for the day Ron Gunderson, ever struggling but getting in for third place on the scorecard playoff and leaving another great effort by Eddie Little with the Atta-Boy. The big deal of the day was Tom Hecocks scoring a hole in one on # 16 hole. That my friends is no easy task. My only claim to fame on that hole is that I have actually hit the power lines twice before when playing the back tees. No hole in ones though, great work Tom. (It’s gotta be the no shoes)
The rain from the previous night made it a little humid but as I checked my weather on the last couple of holes the temperature was only 95. So that wasn’t a factor for most of us. Rumor was that Doug Rankin was run over by a runaway golf cart driven by his golf partner, but suffered mostly dignity injuries. Doug Patterson has applied for Bondurant School of driving training in Phoenix. Have to be careful out there guys. Next up for VGA, Wednesday June 15 2016 Verrado (Raven) GC 7:15 AM $ 35.00, I’m told this course is great to play. Get out there.
Kenny Baca takes 1st place at The Boulders golf course today. Ken was in my group of three that started the day at around 7:30 am and played a steady round most of the day for 63 net. Great job Ken. Tony Dalton took 2nd place at 68 net and Tony Rodriquez and Tim Haight tied at 71 nets. Tony won out on a scorecard playoff for 3rd place and Tim suffered the Atta-Boy prize. Starting at an earlier time helped keep the temps under control and the beautiful scenery made for a very enjoyable round of spectacular golf. Hope all of your’s was the same. Next up for VGA, Saturday June 11 2016 ASU Karsten (+) 6:20 AM $ 31.00. Talk about a course that can have you talking to yourself, this one can, but it’s also challenging and a lot of fun. See you there.
Smokin hot, with temperatures predicted to top 115 degrees and a 9am start time, this chicken decided to forgo playing one of the better tracks we play during the year. Others of a more stout constitution did not forgo the heat and flourished in it. Ron Gunderson did and took first place with a 73 net. In 2nd place and playing very well as of late, Steve Richter with a 74 net. Tied for the 3rd place money at 75s, Jim White and Dan Christiansen. Jim prevailed on the scorecard playoff and Dan took home an Atta-Boy for his trophy case. I noticed the scores were a little higher than normal. I had heard they had just aerated the greens and of course the heat and a 128 slope rating on the very up tees probably accounted for that. We got another picturesque and challenging event this Wednesday June 8, 2016 The Boulders 7:30 AM $ 53.00. Having never played it before I look forward to giving it a try. This course exceeds $250 to play in the Winter so now is a reasonable chance to check it out. See you out there I hope.
Hit them Long, Hit them Straight and in my case Hit them Often.
Hello! Steve Richter is climbing the Big Dog ladder with another good performance at Palmbrook. Claiming 1st place with a 66 net and a 3 stroke win over, Fred Baldwin and Olie Wentzel and Jim Bays who all tied at 69 net. Fred got 2nd place by besting Olie on the scorecard playoff and “Good Luck”, Jim had none, brought home the Atta-Boy. Excellent weather today, breezy but not too bad and still within comfortable heat temps. Next VGA event, Saturday June 4 2016 Quintero 9:00 AM $ 39.00, be there and take your air conditioned underwear.
VGA offers prearranged golf events on Wednesdays and Saturdays at courses in the greater Phoenix area. Come out and play with VGA.
